T33 GMC |
In November 1941, authorization was given for the construction of a 37 mm gun motor carriage based on the 3/4-ton, 4x4 Ford Cargo Carrier. This truck had the engine in an unusual arrangement beside the driver's position, rather than in front of or below it. The vehicle was designed for comparative tests alongside the T21 (M6) GMC, and ultimately was found to be the superior vehicle. This vehicle was designated as the T33 GMC.
Compared to the T21 GMC, the T33 GMC had a lower profile and was considerably lighter. Furthermore, the gun had a wider traverse arc without interfering with the driver. However, the 37 mm gun was quickly becoming obsolete and more firepower was clearly needed. The project was soon closed, but the T33 would serve as the basis for the T44 GMC.
T44 GMC |
The T44 GMC was essentially the same vehicle as before, just with the 57 mm Gun M1. But the gun arc this time was limited to 90 degrees over the rear. However, the carriage proved to be too light for this weapon and the project was similarly abandoned.
As I'm proposing it, the T44 GMC is merely a combination of these two vehicles. Compared to the M6 GMC, this vehicle offers a basic improvement in firepower and mobility. However, its gun handling should be similarly poor and the same traverse handicaps apply.
