M26E1 armed with the 3-Inch Gun T98. |
After WWII, there were various attempts made to upgrade the M26 Pershing. The first, the M26E1, was armed with the 90 mm T54 gun, a weapon designed to use one-piece ammunition while still retaining the ballistic capabilities of the 90 mm T15E2. Later tests, also in the M26E1, replaced the 90 mm gun with the high-powered 3 Inch Gun T98. This weapon was ballistically identical with the Navy's 3 Inch, 70 caliber antiaircraft gun. A new engine was also proposed, and this version would become the M26E2. However, plans for more powerful armament were cancelled when the specifications for the modernized M26 were revised in the Spring of 1948.
This tank should be comparable to the British Churchill line of tanks: very well armored, with a small-caliber yet fast-firing, accurate, and punchy gun. Unlike the Churchill tanks, however, this tank is much faster. It's basically a more mobile M26 Pershing, with a faster firing and punchier gun. The DPM should be comparable between the two tanks, however.
